SECTION E STRATEGY
How to Handle 5-Mark Questions
1. The "15-Minute" Selection
Section E always has internal choices (OR). Use the Reading Time to decide.
Pick the "Parts": Choose the question that has parts (a, b, c). It is easier to score 2+2+1 than a straight 5-mark essay.
Avoid "Vague" Theory: Avoid questions like "Explain the principle...". Choose "Derive the expression..." instead. Math marks are guaranteed; theory marks are subjective.
2. Anatomy of a 5-Marker
Never write a huge paragraph. Break it down:
Part 1 (Diagram): Pencil, Ruler, Labels. (1 Mark)
Part 2 (Assumptions): "Let us consider a Gaussian surface..." (0.5 Mark)
Part 3 (Derivation): Step-by-step math. (2.5 Marks)
Part 4 (Conclusion): Box the final formula. (1 Mark)
3. The "Numerical Tail"
Most 5-mark questions have a small numerical attached at the end (Part b).
Don't Ignore It: Students spend 20 mins on the derivation and forget the numerical. It carries 2 marks!
Tip: If you get stuck in the derivation, leave space and solve the numerical part first. Secure those 2 marks immediately.
4. Presentation Hacks
Spacing: Leave 2 lines between steps. It makes the paper look neat and easy to check.
Highlighting: Underline the "Final Answer" and "Key Laws" (e.g., According to Biot-Savart Law).
New Page: Always start a 5-Mark question on a FRESH PAGE. Don't squeeze it at the bottom.
